About Mrs. Rubeck
My name is Kristy Rubeck, and I am the Library Media Specialist at Bester Elementary School in Hagerstown, Maryland. This is my fourth year as a Library Media Specialist. Before I taught Media, I taught for 13 years in PreK, Kindergarten, and 1st grade. Reading has been my life-long passion. My earliest memories are of me walking around my grandparents house with a stack of books asking anyone and everyone to read to me. My love of reading and sharing that love with children is what led me to the teaching profession and made the move to Library Media a natural choice. |
Developing a love of reading in students has always been the my number one goal as an educator. The achievement that I am proudest of in my time as a Library Media Specialist is developing the One Book, One School program at Bester Elementary School. One Book, One School is a yearly school-wide initiative. Teachers in PreK-5th read a loud a selected chapter to their students. Teacher follow a reading calendar that I created, so the entire student body was experiencing the book at the same time. Using Title One funding, copies of the book were given to each family so parents could participate at home. When the book was finished, classed had a celebration day, created visuals to show what the book meant to them, and hosted a parent night themed around the book. What a great way to celebrate a literacy as a school community!
One of the greatest joys of my life, both personally and professionally, has been working with the Children's Literature Centre at Frostburg State University. I began working there as a graduate assistant in 2001 and I am still an active member of the Centre as a member of the Director's Advisory Committee. My family and I look forward to attending the Spring Festival of Children's Literature every April. In 2017, a committee from the Literature Centre surprised me by awarding me the Betty Roemmelmeyer Advocate Award. The inscription on the Advocate Award reads "an educator who exhibits a love of children's literature and strives to share it with others." I work everyday to continue to live up to the inscription!
