They are traveling from Ohio to Idaho to see Sal's mom who left her family one night. On the road trip, Sal begins to tell her grandparents the story of Phoebe Winterbottom. As Sal tells Phoebe's story her grandparents and the readers begin to notice how Phoebe's story and Sal's have a lot of similarities. |

El Deafo
El Deafo is a graphic novel that won the Newbery Honor in 2015. The story is about a young rabbit, named Cece, who gets meningitis when she is four and loses the ability to hear. Over the next several years she struggles with learning to read lips, finding hearing aids that work, and going to a special school. What Cece wants more than anything is a friend. She creates a "superhero" personality for herself named El Deafo to help her cope with her loneliness. This book is based on the life of the author Cece Bell. |
